TMC Appoints Babul Supriyo As National Spokesperson

BABUL SUPRIYO

According to sources in Mamata Banerjee-camp, the Trinamool Congress has appointed MLA Babul Supriyo as a national spokesperson of the party, news agency PTI reported.

Supriyo, who was a union minister while he was in the BJP,  took to Twitter to thank the party supremo Mamata Banerjee for giving him the new responsibility.

“My sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Didi @MamataOfficial & @abhishekaitc for appointing/including me in the illustrious Team of National Spokespersons of @AITCofficial. Shall do my very best to live up to the responsibility entrusted upon me,” Supriyo said.

Supriyo’s appointment as a national spokesperson was a part of the strategy devised by the party to expand its base outside Bengal, a senior TMC leader said, reported PTI.

“He is a well-known face across the country, both as a singer and a politician. So he can help us place our views and policies on the national stage,” the TMC leader said.

Babul Supriyo, after being removed as union minister last year, had quit the BJP and joined Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. He also gave up the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, which he had won on the BJP’s ticket twice.

After joining the TMC, Supriyo was nominated for the Ballygunge assembly bypoll in April this year, which he won with comfortable margin.
