Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday said that Kaali, for her, was a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess.

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has unfollowed the official Twitter handle of the TMC after her party clarified its stance on the comments made by Ms. Moitra for her comments on Goddess Kaali.

She was responding to a question at the India Today Conclave East 2022 on the row over a poster depicting an actor dressed up as the Goddess smoking a cigarette.

However, Moitra still follows  TMC supremo and Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday said that Kaali, for her, goddess Kali was a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess.

“When you go to Sikkim, you will see that they offer whiskey to goddess Kaali. But if you go to Uttar Pradesh, and if you tell them that you offer whiskey to the goddess as ‘prasad’, they will call it blasphemy,”  Moitra added.

TMC put up their statement in the form of a tweet that said “The comments made by @MahuaMoitra at the #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are NOT ENDORSED BY THE PARTY in ANY MANNER OR FORM. All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments.”

The poster of the documentary film at the center of the row recently went viral on social media with several people saying that the poster was an insult to the Hindu goddess and hurt religious sentiments.

“The comments made by @MahuaMoitra at the #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are NOT ENDORSED BY THE PARTY in ANY MANNER OR FORM. All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments,” the tweet put out by the official handle of TMC read.

Social media users have responded furiously to the documentary poster for Leena Manimekalai’s film because of how Goddess Kali is depicted. A police complaint against the filmmaker offended religious sensitivities.

First Delhi and now UP police have filed a Fir against  Manimekalai.
