Trouble for CJI Mishra? Congress to bring impeachment motion in Rajya Sabha

An impeachment motion can be brought against the CJI if at least 50 Rajya Sabha MPs support it.

Nearly two months after the historic press conference conducted by the four Supreme Court judges alleging organizational mismanagement, the Congress is in the process to bring an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India- Dipak Mishra. The party is running a signature campaign for the same in Rajya Sabha.

An impeachment motion can be brought against the CJI if at least 50 Rajya Sabha MPs support it. Congress which is the major opposition party has earlier brought a no-confidence motion against the government. Now, it is trying to gather the support of opposition parties to bring the impeachment motion.

It has also prepared a draft petition which argued that the issues raised by the four Supreme Court judges were not addressed appropriately by the CJI. The party is taking signatures of MPs from DMK, NCP, Samajwadi Party, CPI, CPIM and other left parties. The party is also keen on getting TMC on board since her last meeting with NCP chief Sharad Pawar to show solidarity with the opposition.

According to sources, the leaders’ opinion was divided on whether to move impeachment motion or not. However, the senior leaders including the Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad discussed the matter and came to the conclusion. The petition will be presented in front Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu in next few days.
