Tushar Gandhi slams BJP over Bharat Ratna for Savarkar

Tushar said, “Savarkar may have been acquitted in the case, but the court did not pronounce him innocent”

On Friday Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi criticizes the BJP government for pitching a Bharat Ratna award for Veer Savarkar.

In its election manifesto for Maharashtra, the BJP had said it will try for Veer Savarkar the Bharat Ratna.

Veer Savarkar is considered to be among the prominent ideologues of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Tushar Gandhi said, “I think it is important that we understand the real objective and conspiracy behind Bapu’s murder, at a time when the patron of Bapu’s murder is considered to be given Bharat Ratna.”

Tushar Gandhi also said that Savarkar was acquited of the murder charges but he was not declared innocent in the case.

Tushar added, “Savarkar may have been acquitted in the case, but the court did not pronounce him innocent”.

Tushar Gandhi said that the court let him go as they did not have enough evidence to prove Savarkar’s guilt.

He said, “The court only said that we’ve not had enough evidence presented to us to prove his guilt beyond doubt.”

“We must remember this while Sanghis contemplate giving him Bharat Ratna,” Tushar Gandhi said.
