UP Congress chief Raj Babbar resigns over party’s poor performance

Lucknow | Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar has reportedly resigned from his position over the massive defeat of Congress in the state.

With managing to win only one seat, Congress had a poor performance in the state this election.

Whereas, the BJP emerged victorious in 62 out of 80 seats in the Lok Sabha assembly.

Raj Babbar according to sources took “moral responsibility” for the loss. A number of Congress leaders have offered resignation taking responsibility including Chief Rahul Gandhi.

“I will meet the leadership and apprise it of my views. Congratulations to the winners for winning the confidence of the people,” he said.

Raj Babbar, who contested from Fatehpur Sikri, lost by a margin of over 4,95,065 votes to BJP’s Rajkumar Chahar.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) won five seats and its alliance partner Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) nine.

While Sonia Gandhi has retained her seat of Rae Bareli by more than 1,67,178 votes.
