Carson also raised his concern for the removal of article 370 from the constitution, the special status in Jammu and Kashmir
Washington: The Citizenship Amendment Bill is an attempt to decline minority Muslims into second class citizens, a Muslim-American Congressman Andre Carson has called as the controversial bill which got the clearance from both the houses of the Indian parliament.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, was passed by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and Lok Sabha cleared the Bill on Monday.
“CAB implementation is yet another attempt to effectively reduce Muslims in India to second-class citizens, said the democrat leader. Andre Carson is one of the three Muslim members currently serving in the US Congress.
Carson also raised his concern for the removal of article 370 from the constitution, the special status in Jammu and Kashmir.
“When Indian PM Narendra Modi announced the unilateral changes to Jammu and Kashmir’s status on August 5, I expressed my grave concern about its effects for the future of the state, Carson said.
Carson Called it a dangerous move that disregards international norms, he said that the Indian government has ignored the democratic will of the Kashmiri people, undermined the rich tradition of Indian constitutionalism and raises big questions about the future of the nation.
On August 5 India abrogated provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and separated it into two union territories. Pakistan reacted strongly to India’s decision on Article 370 and downgraded bilateral ties and expelled the Indian envoy.
Categorically India has told the international community that the abrogation of Article 370 was an internal matter. It has also suggested Pakistan, accept the reality and stop all anti-India propaganda.
“Today, we witness yet another potentially ruinous move by the Narendra Modi, as lawmakers enacted his stringent CAB,” Carson said.
