Vasundhara Raje announces free electricity to 12 lakh farmers in Rajasthan ahead of assembly polls

Ajmer | Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje delivering one of its major promises ahead of the upcoming polls announced that the farmers in the state will get free electricity up to Rs 10,000.

Raje’s announcement came few hours before the Election Commission of India announced the schedule of upcoming assembly election in the state of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. Addressing the booth level workers along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ajmer, the Rajasthan CM announced that more than 12 lakh farmers of the state will receive free electricity up to Rs. 10,000 for a year on their agricultural electricity connection.

According to Rajasthan Energy Department officials, the announced scheme will be effective from November 2018 billing month for the general category rural farmers. Farmers can avail the benefits in the form of grants through Direct Benefit transfer (DBT). However, the farmers need the pay the bill first later the maximum amount of Rs 833 per month will be deposited in their respective bank accounts.

Taking a dig at the announcement by Raje, former Chief Minister, and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot criticised the announcement. “What’s the meaning of making this announcement an hour before the implementation of the code of conduct by this outgoing government? Why she didn’t give free electricity to farmers in her five-year tenure?” he wrote on Twitter. He further alleged that the announcement by the Chief Minister has come after the Congress in its ‘Charbhuja Kisan Samelan’ had announced that it will give free electricity to the farmers.

The Election Commision on Saturday announced that the Assembly election will be conducted in the state of Rajasthan on 7 December while the results will be announced on 11 December.
