Walk With Them, Pick Their bags: Sitharaman After Rahul Gandhi Meets Migrants

FM Nirmala Sitharaman asked why isn’t the Congress doing something more for the migrants in the states ruled by the party.

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi’s move to meet migrant workers camping at a flyover in Delhi as “dramabaazi” was ridiculed today by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She said the Congress should “be more responsible” while targeting the central government on anguished migrants because of the national lockdown.

“Instead of wasting the time of migrants and sitting with them, walk along with them and carry their suitcase. In Congress-ruled states, request for more trains so that more migrants can reach home. They call us dramebaaz. What about yesterday? That is dramabaazi,” Finance Minister said.

Nirmala Sitharaman was addressing her fifth press conference to share details of an economic stimulus package for various sectors hit by the COVID-19 crisis and national lockdown.

“Let us deal more responsibly with this issue – this is my humble request to Sonia Gandhi,” said Dr Sitharaman.

“I am urging the opposition party very politely, folding my hands and requesting them here. We must all come together and help migrant labourers in this crisis,” the finance minister said.

“We ensured that lakhs of migrant workers reach their native places, get food, essentials. Yet many are on the roads, walking back home, it is painful,” she said.

“Go walk with them, pick up their bags rather than sitting next to them and talking to them,” Sitharaman stated.

The finance minister said that now is not the time to indulge in politics.
