The resignation of Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar clears the path of Maha Vikas Aghadi to form the government in the state.
Mumbai| Hours after Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar resigned from his post, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis too announced that he will resign from his post. Fadnavis said that after Ajit Pawar’s resignation, the alliance does not have enough numbers to prove majority in tomorrow’s floor test. “We had said this on day 1, we will not indulge in horse-trading. We do not have numbers. thus, we will not form the govt.”
He informed that after the press conference, he will visit the governor and submit his resignation. The shocking development comes a few hours after the Supreme Court today ordered to select a protem speaker and conduct a floor test in Maharashtra on Wednesday by 5 PM.
Both Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar had taken oath as the CM and Deputy CM of Maharashtra on Saturday, November 23 at 8 AM in a shocking development. However, their resignation clears the path of Maha Vikas Aghadi to form the government in the state.
Minutes after the announcement, ShivSena leader Sanjay Raut said that Uddhav Thackeray will be the CM and leader of the coalition.
With this Devendra Fadnavis becomes the Chief Minister for the shortest term ever that is 4 days. Earlier, it was BJP’s BS Yediyurappa who was Chief Minister of Karnataka for 6 days.
Here is the complete speech of Devendra Fadnavis:
“We received a mandate for 105 seats. People of Maharashtra had given a mandate for Mahayuti. We won 67% of the seats contested. ShivSena won 40-42% of the seats contested. Despite that, we wanted to form a govt of Mahayuti.”
“We had an arrangement before the elections. We were clear about the CM post. Even before elections, in several interviews, rallies we said that. But after seeing the number game ShivSena felt that their bargaining power can increase. Thus they started saying since first press conference that CM post was promised to ShivSena. Our leader Amit Shah, before elections in every interview and rally, had made it clear.”
“They threatened us that if you do not concede to our demands, we will go with any party. But we took a stand that we will only give what was promised. We waited for many days but they did not hold talks with us but the other parties. Meanwhile, the term assembly ended. Governor called us but we told the governor that we do not have numbers. Then the governor called ShivSena, Everyone knows how it made fun of itself by expressing that they have the numbers. Then NCP was called but they did not have a number too. So the President’s Rule was imposed.”
“Even after that for 10-12 days the talks were going on between the three parties continuously. The three parties said that we will form a govt but it couldn’t happen because three polar opposite parties who were coming together and preparing the common minimum programme. Their only agenda was to keep BJP away. But they couldn’t finalize it, couldn’t take any decision.”
“Amidst the shadow of President’s Rule, NCP’s legislature party leader Ajit Pawar decided to support us for govt formation. We talked to him and as per our discussion, he gave us the letter. On that basis, we formed the govt. Tomorrow we have to prove the majority. Today Ajit Pawar met me and told that due to some reasons I can’t continue in this alliance. He submitted his resignation. Now he has resigned, we also do not have the numbers.”
“BJP has adopted this [policy since the first day that we will not break MLAs of any party. We will not indulge in horse-trading. Entire NCP MLA team came to us that’s why we staked claim to form govt. After the press conference, I will go and submit my resignation. Best wishes to those who will form government today. I am confident they will try to run a good government. But I am afraid this government will be burdened by its own pressure. There is so much difference of opinion. Yesterday, when ShivSena leaders were taking oath under the name of Sonia Gandhi. They are helpless for Power. We will work as an opposition party effectively.”
