“We will hear the petition only if violence stops”: SC on petition over Jamia University clash

The Delhi HC refused to immediately hear the petition filed against the police action in Jamia. The petitioner demanded a judicial inquiry into the violence in Jamia.

New Delhi| The issue of rampant protests and police action in Jamia and Aligarh Muslim University played before the Supreme Court on Monday against the citizenship amendment bill. Senior lawyers Indira Jaising and Colin Gonzalez demanded a bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde to seek cognizance of the case. On this, the CJI said that the nuisance should be stopped first. If this continues, the court will not do anything. If there is no violence tomorrow, we will hear the issue. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has registered two FIRs on Jamia violence.

Lawyers said that a team of retired judges should be sent to the university campus. Only then will the situation be in control. Jaisingh said that the human rights situation is serious throughout the country. CJI said, “We know how riots occur. Stop the nuisance first. We are not saying who is right and who is wrong. But public property is being harmed on every side. Until the peaceful demonstrations, it was fine. But it won’t go that way. You cannot justify the demonstrations simply on the basis that there were students doing it. Nothing has happened without provocation on both sides (police and students).”

High Court denies an immediate hearing on Jamia violence

At the same time, the Delhi High Court refused to immediately hear the petition filed against the police action in Jamia. The petitioner demanded a judicial inquiry into the violence in Jamia. He also said that medical facilities and compensation should be given to the 52 injured students taken into custody. However, the Delhi High Court asked the petitioner to reach the court through the registry itself.
