A 25-year-old Tamil Nadu youth set himself on fire following Centre’s alleged inaction to form Cauvery Management board.
The Cauvery protest in the state of Tamil Nadu has intensified over last few weeks. So much so, that the Tamilians even showed Go Back Modi posters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the state for the defence Expo. When Prime Minister Modi landed in Chennai, the protestors were waiting with black flags and thus, he was taken by chopper to the spot of Defence Expo.
Now, it has been reported that a 25-year-old youth has set himself on fire following Centre’s alleged inaction to form Cauvery Management board as per the Supreme Court order. The incident occurred when Prime Minister was still in the state.
The man has opposed PM Modi’s visit to the state. He was also unhappy with the state AIADMK Chief minister Palaniswami. He had also scribbled this on the wall of his house. “Cauvery water is the lifeline for the people of Tamil Nadu. Yet, Chief Minister K Palaniswami and Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi have not taken any action to form a Cauvery Management Board. Also, I oppose Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu,” the message read.
According to the police officials, the 25 years old man poured kerosene all over his body and set a fire. He has suffered 90% burn injuries. He was taken to erode government hospital immediately. However, the condition of the youth is said to be very critical.
Several protests by celebrities, civilians and activists for Cauvery Management Board have brought the state of Tamil Nadu to a standstill since few weeks. The people are demanding the Centre implement the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Cauvery dispute. The Government was given six weeks to form the Cauvery Management Board. However, Centre sought time from the Supreme Court until the Karnataka Assembly Elections.
The Apex Court, however, slammed the government for failing to implement the order and asked to form a draft Cauvery Management Board until May 3 when the next hearing in the matter is due.
