Environmentalists say lake’s ‘concretisation’ will pollute the area for years
Over 100 residents and environmentalists protested against the proposed beautification plan of Kavesar Wetland Lake in Thane’s Hiranandani Estate on Thursday.
Opposing ‘concretisation’ of the 150-year-old lake, protesters said artificial structures that would be built will damage the wetland permanently.
They add most of the facilities that the beautification plan entails already exist within a few metres of the wetland lake.

People wore black and held placards with information on why the wetland is beneficial for Thane’s ecosystem and the unique flora and fauna that make it so special.
Spread across 2.46 hectares, Kavesar lake is home to a wide range of birds including migratory species. For residents, this is also among the few, quiet, green spaces in the vicinity.
The protesting citizens spoke to passersby and residents to raise awareness about the urgency to save the wetland lake from concretisation attempts.
The protest was held under the banner ‘Save Kavesar Lake Citizens Movement’ and supported by the Thane Greens Collective and Muse Foundation.

An online petition to halt the beautification has crossed over 4000 signatures.
Officials, including Shiv Sena MP from Thane Naresh Mhaske, reiterated that the lake won’t be damaged as part of beautification. TOI quoted Mhaske saying the beautification project was developed ‘based on resident requests to convert it into a recreational area’.
The Save Kavesar Lake Citizens Movement planned a heritage tree walk on Sunday, 8 June, at the site.
