UP: 19-Year-Old Girl Raped, Family Claims Cops Pressured Her to Marry Accused

A 19-year-old woman was raped multiple times by a married man in Uttar Pradesh. The victim’s family alleges that the police pressured them to marry her to the accused, citing her pregnancy when they went to file a complaint.

The accused, Sajid Ali (approximately 35 years old) from the Kotwali area, was arrested on Sunday evening, police said. He befriended the woman, who lived in the same locality and began visiting her house, Superintendent of Police (SP) Meenakshi Katyayan told PTI, citing the FIR.

“Ali was arrested by one of our teams this evening. Further legal actions are underway,” the officer added.

According to the FIR, on March 10, 2024, Ali allegedly raped the woman when she was alone at her home and filmed the assault. When the woman threatened to lodge a complaint, the accused used the video to blackmail her, threatening to post it online.

Ali continued to rape her, which resulted in her pregnancy. Her parents noticed the physical changes in her, after which she disclosed the incident, the SP said.

In September 2024, the woman and her parents went to the police to file a complaint against the accused, but the police allegedly persuaded them to agree to a marriage between the woman and Ali, citing her pregnancy.
The complaint reads that the marriage took place without a proper investigation and against the woman’s will.

According to the police, Ali was already married and lived with his wife elsewhere.

The woman gave birth to a stillborn child at a private hospital on November 26, the SP said.

The police stated that the woman’s statement has been recorded and a medical examination was conducted. A case was registered under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code.
