Is Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh an “Uttam Pradesh” as BJP MLAs fear grip on the rape victim and the village?

It has been just a couple of years that Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh had promised to turn Uttar Pradesh into ‘Uttam Pradesh’ however, the prevailing circumstances of rape and violence that keep on happening in the state so often, seem to be suggesting a different scenario. What has been transpiring in the state so far is the silencing of the voices that articulate the ill-doings of the stakeholders of the ruling government there. this sure poses a question on Adityanath’s Ram Rajya. Quite recently, a young woman alleged that she was raped by a BJP MLA named Kuldeep Singh Sengar but it’s been almost a year that she has been waiting for justice to be served. On the contrary, she saw no better option than to immolate herself in front of Yogi’s residence considering that hopelessness had seemed to taken over her with the matter just lurking in dark corners.

However, this is just the beginning. Soon after that, the victim’s father was tortured, beaten up mercilessly by the acquaintances of MLA. While all this kept happening, all that Yogi Adityanath and the Centre did was to rather remain quiet even as the MLA dismissed the allegations that were made against him. He termed them to be a conspiracy against him where he was clearly set up and framed by the opposition party. In fact, BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar calls the complainants as ‘lowly people’ who are trying to ‘taint his image’. What is even more appalling is even after being accused of rape, Kuldeep Sengar keeps his arrogance intact.

Despite all this, what may take one by complete shock is that in spite the serious charges against him the MLA from Bangarmau in Uttar Pradesh is still a free man. The actions taken by the police so far have been limited to arresting his brother. However, even this arrest is just for the assault made to the victim’s father and not for the rape that was done to her.

The woman’s father was thrashed by MLA’s brother last week, as a result, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday in police custody. Tragically the victim’s father was not even hospitalized. Yogi Adityanath government received the flak of the people and serious questions are being asked about the conduct of the UP police. Why was the FIR not registered against BJP MLA despite a complainant had clearly named him? Why was no cognizance was taken for the security of the victim’s family? After all, this is not the India that we had dreamt of. Moreover, a more imperative question here arises that are the MLAs in Adityanath’s government above the law? What is it that is really transpiring in the state of Uttar Pradesh and where this all is leading to?

The doctor who examined victim’s father at the district hospital discharged him by saying he is ‘fit for custody’. On the contrary, if medical negligence would have not been there, the victim’s father would have been saved.

Why is Kuldeep Sengar being saved? Maybe because of his influential contacts linked to independent Pratapgarh MLA Raja Bhaiya. Sengar also enjoys the image of prominent ‘Kshatriya’ leader in the Unnau constituency. Nonetheless, this incident surely speaks volumes for the wide assertions of safety and security of women by Yogi Adityanath. The centre’s silence on this episode is equally disturbing, as BJP chose to keep mum.

Our question to the honourable prime minister of India is where are your claims on women safety and tough policing. After all the ‘not-so-rosy’ image of PM Modi’s claim on ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ seems to be quite evident in this case. Be it the incident where a woman named Varnika Kundu was stalked by ‘Goon son’ of Haryana BJP president Subhash Barala, Vikas Barala and his friends or the incident where the girl students of prestigious Benaras Hindu University (BHU) were beaten up by male police personnel for protesting against eve-teasing.

PM Modi has always openly spoken about saving India’s pride who are its daughters. Shockingly, Modi’s strong critics never dared to criticize this campaign, since it promised the upliftment of Indian Women, release them from the strong clutches of patriarchy, sexual abuse, day-to-day struggles. PM Modi, unfortunately, seems to have failed miserably owing to this political bragging. More importantly, why there is no louder cry for the resignation of the crusader of ‘Hinduism’ Yogi Adityanath.

It seems the Hinduism that Yogi Aditynath so strongly propels appears to be fading into nothingness considering the recurring incidents of rape and women abuse in the state.

Uttar Pradesh that is reigned virtually by a ‘Mahant’ (Archimandrite) has miserably failed to protect the chastity of a woman and is not able to punish the perpetrators who are walking free. There is a verse in the Sanskrit which says,

यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवताः ।

यत्रैतास्- तु न पूज्यन्ते सर्वास्तत्- राफलाः क्रियाः ॥

[yatra naaryastu puujyante ramante tatra devataaH |

yatraitaastu na puujyante sarvaastatraaphalaaH kriyaaH ||]

This means, where a woman is respected, the place becomes God’s abode, by God’s abode, we mean, divine qualities, good deeds, peace and harmony. However, it is only sad that the same Yogi Aditynath who has always maintained that he is a staunch follower of the Bhagvad Gita, has seemingly forgotten to integrate its verses in his actions.
