Editorial with Sujit Nair: Can A Tweet Spoil India’s Image?

On Tuesday, International pop singer Rihanna tweeted about Farmers Protest that is going on in India. She wrote on Twitter, “Why aren’t we talking about this” that is the Farmers Protest. She also shared a CNN report with that which talked about the internet being shut down in neighbouring areas of Delhi in light of the Violence at the protest on Republic day as well as after that at Singhu border.
After Rihanna, 18 year old Climate activist Greta Thunberg tweeted in support of India’s farmers. She wrote “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India.” Both the tweets garnered millions of Likes and Thousands of Retweets and got many from the international community to talk about what is happening in India with respect to Farmers Protest. Many like Meena Harris- niece of Kamala Harris, Youtuber Lilly Singh, Ugandan climate justice activist Vanessa and many other amplified the voice of concern raised by Rihanna. Even NBA players like Kyle Kuzma, and Baron Davis Raised their voices in support of the Farmers. Meanwhile, NFL player Juju Smith-Schuster donates $10,000 “to provide medical assistance to farmers in need in India”
Well it has been 70 days now that the farmers protest is going on in India and it is also receiving a significant support from various sections of society within India. But this overnight international attention and support to the protest sent the Indian govt in hysteria.
