Adani-India’s “Drone” Acharya| What Does This Data Say

“Drones are becoming a necessary and integral component of modern-day warfare. The fact is evident by observing the Ukraine-Russia war. In the first two months of the engagement, Ukraine used the Turkish built TB-2 Bayraktar drones very effectively against the Russians. It is only in the last month that the Russians have changed their tactics and started responding using drones and other electronic means. No war of the future can be won using convention tactics. So, where does India stand in the development and deployment of drone and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) technologies. The global drone commercial market stands at $26 billion in 2021. The market is growing at a phenomenal rate. India’s share in this market is around 4.5%. In the last fiver years, around 40 new start-ups have come up in the country who are working on commercial drone applications. Significantly, none of them are developing military grade weaponized UAVs. Till recently, India was looking to the United States for military drones and UAVs. Since 2016 a dialogue was on-going to procure 30 to 40 Predator drones from the US, but the talks never fructified. In February this year, the deal was scrapped by India citing ‘extortionist prices’ It was decided that India would focus on ‘indigenous’ drone manufacturing. Watch the episode to see how the Adani group is becoming a premium manufacturer of military drones for our armed forces.
