“We have been so told that the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has a ‘prachand’ mandate of the people of India and is ruling half of India. I was intrigued by the word ‘prachand’, so I decided to find out what the word really stands for. Though I have interpreted it as meaning ‘massive’, I am still not sure what the BJP means when its leaders repeatedly use this word. Linguistics apart, I also look into the vote share of the BJP in the state assemblies. We tend to forget the vote share of the parties once the election is over. Because, in our country, the election system is such that the winner takes all. And hence, even parties with minuscule vote shares are able to govern us. My analysis shows that the BJP is mostly a single-state party, which is diametrically opposite to what we are made to believe. This one state is Uttar Pradesh. If one wishes to be a bit more liberal you add Gujarat to the list. I know many of you will tend to scoff at this statement or downright disbelieve it. I suggest you go through this episode and decide for yourself. Always remember, majority can be manipulated, but vote share reflects the party’s support base. Unfortunately, these very few supporters today are dictating the fortune of the remaining people of India.
