It seems to me like a three-legged animal that is running a 100-meter race,” said former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, taking a dig at the BJP, Shinde Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar camp NCP-led government in Maharashtra. The Congress leader, in a tweet, said, “The CM and the two Deputy CMs of Maharashtra claim that their government is a triple-engine government. It seems to me like a three-legged animal that is running a 100-meter race. Nine new ministers in Maharashtra do not have any work because portfolios have not been allotted to them. None of the other 20 ministers, including Mr. Fadnavis, wants to give up any portfolio.” The Congress leader further offered a suggestion: “There is a solution: declare that the nine new ministers will be Ministers without a portfolio. The nine new entrants joined the government to be ministers. Who said they wanted to be ministers with portfolios?” Mr. Chidambaram tweeted. Now, I fail to understand that Mr. Chidambaram, who called the current government a three-legged animal, is from a part which was part of a tri-party alliance in the state until last year. So was Maha Vikas Aghadi a three-legged animal as well, running a 100-meter race? However, the second half of the tweet remains a fact, as even after almost two weeks of the rebellion, the portfolio allocation is due. What HW News English has learned from sources in NCP as well as Shinde Shiv Sena is that there is massive unrest amongst party leaders over plum portfolios such as finance, urban development department, cooperation, irrigation, and agriculture. According to reports, in a bid to fast-track talks, Pawar, along with Rajya Sabha MP Praful Patel, traveled to Delhi on Wednesday afternoon to meet the top leadership of the BJP to finalize the portfolio allocation. On Thursday Ajit Pawar camp spokesperson Sunil Tatkare said that the Maharashtra cabinet expansion and distribution of cabinet portfolios will be completed by the evening today, However, it looks like even the BJP’s top brass has failed in solving the issue this time. Currently, there are 29 ministers in the state cabinet, which has a maximum strength of 43. Now, where does the Congress stand in all this? The Congress, which is the single largest opposition party in the state with 45 elected lawmakers by their side, has decided to wait for some time before laying claim to the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly after a request from Sharad Pawar, who has sought time until it sorts out the matter arising out of the vertical split in the party. More political drama awaits Maharashtra as the Maharashtra Assembly session is set to commence on 17th July.
