Congress Leader Tariq Anwar’s below the belt remark: “PM Modi does not have any lineage”

Even though the Model Code of conduct expects our leaders and politicians to maintain ideal behaviour and have civilized debates, this is followed rarely. There are countless examples of our leaders crossing the line when criticising the opposition party. In an outrageous statement, today Congress leaders questioned the lineage of Prime minister Narendra Modi for questioning the dynasty culture of Congress. Congress Leader Tariq Anwar went ahead and said that “Modi Ji does not have a successor in the family, which is why he is making such comments.” (Tariq Anwar Byte)
But it was not only him. Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Nabi Azad too joined the chorus and said the same.
Well, you may remember, just a day ago Union Culture Minister and BJP MP Mahesh Sharma referred to Congress president Rahul Gandhi as ā€œPappuā€ and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as ā€œPappu ki Pappiā€ during a poll campaign. He drew widespread flak from the opposition party which termed his remarks condemnable.
Was that statement shameful? Yes. Was it below the belt. Definitely. Was this uncivilized remark uncalled for. Absolutely. But then all of this also applies to what Tariq Anwar and Ghulam Nabi Azad said too. You cannot preach something without practicing yourself. And for the leaders, the election season is heated up but below the belt remarks not only belittle your own party’s image, but also of our public discourse.
