Deaf Chess Champion Malika Handa Accuses Punjab Govt of Going Back On Promise of Cash Reward, Job

“It is a sad reality that sportspersons who make India proud are hailed when they win medals, the other times they just go into oblivion. When they win, they enjoy public support, ministers, politicians line up to meet them, getting a photo clicked with them, to announce appreciation prize from their side, but once the media attention wears down, the athletes, the sportspersons fade from the public memory and the promises made to them are often forgotten.

Something similar happened to Mallika Handa, the golden girl in chess from Jalandhar. Mallika Handa, a divyang chess champion has won several medals in national and international championships. She took to Twitter on Sunday to vent her anger against state Education and Sports Minister Pargat Singh.

Mallika is suffering from 90 per cent hearing disability and speech impairment, posted a short video clip and a snapshot of an email which she had sent to Rahul Gandhi, CM Charanjit Singh Channi and PPCC president Navjot Sidhu on her Twitter handle.

The seven-time national deaf chess champion, Handa who was visibly upset, displayed the several medals and trophies she had earned for the country and asked Why is the Punjab Government being so unfair to her?
