At a time when India has slipped further on the World Press freedom index and journalists are being targeted for doing their job, sedition cases are filed against them, they are being put behind bars, Mandeep Punia comes across as a voice of all of us in the fraternity.
Mandeep a freelance journalist with the Caravan has been reporting on farmers protest from Singhu border but a week ago he was picked up by the police and FIR was filed against him. We all saw the video, how amidst the barricading mandeep was being dragged by the policemen, for few hours after that, the journalists and reporters on ground said that they had no clue where Mandeep was and police was not giving clear information. It was later revealed that he was taken to a nearby police station and charged with obstructing the police in their duty. He was sent to Tihar jail. Sup[port poured in from across the Country demanding his release. And now he is out on bail.
When he came out, we saw he had notes scribbled on his body, it was the names and stories of farmers who have been put in jail by the police. Even in the most adverse circumstances, Mandeep did not for a moment shy away from doing his job as a journalist. The job of bringing truth to people.
