Israel Should Not Control Gaza In Long-Term; Territory Should Be Governed By Palestinian: Biden

Days after the Israel-Hamas war continues to escalate, the United States has cautioned against long-term Israeli occupation of the Gaza strip on Sunday, after the White House tried to balance support for the country with fears that the regional crisis could escalate. Joe Biden said that Gaza-based Hamas must be destroyed but there must be a path to a Palestinian state. Biden has warned that an Israeli re-occupation of Gaza would be a big mistake. Biden has also stressed his belief that Israel would act by the rules of war. Biden stated his belief that Israel should not control the territory long-term, and the territory should be governed by a Palestinian authority. Biden shared his view on Hamas and said that Hamas does not represent all the Palestinian people. This comes from Biden when the Israeli Defense Forces were readying a ground invasion of Gaza. This invasion from Israel prompted hundreds of thousands of residents to flee south. There are now concerns of a huge humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and according to Palestinian officials more than 2600 people in Gaza have been killed and 9600 injured in the Israeli missile firing and shelling. In his interview, Biden has talked about ‘safe-zone’. Biden and his team are discussing the establishment of a safe-zone for the residents of Gaza. They are also in talk with the Egyptian government about assistance in getting women and children out of the conflict zone. Biden has reiterated that he does not see a reason for US troops to intervene directly in the situation, though he has pressed lawmakers to provide additional military assistance to Israel. This attack which took place on October 7 by Hamas, has been met with unwavering support from Biden for Israel’s right to defend itself. This war has seen a significant rise in casualties with the death toll breaching 4000 on Monday. On Israel’s side more than 1400 people were killed in the Hamas attack. The hospitals in Gaza are packed with wounded people, and are running dangerously on low fuel and basic supplies. There is a growing water crisis after Israel stopped the flow of resources to the Gaza strip. The supply of electricity, fuel, food and goods have been cut off from Gaza. According to Israeli authorities, this seizure will not end until Israeli hostages are released.
