Sri Lanka Thrown In Chaos, Violence As Anti and Pro Govt Protestors Clash After Rajapaksa Resigns

“For more than a month, protests have rocked Sri Lanka. The Economic crisis in the country has only deepened and common citizens are struggling to make ends meet. Amidst this the calls were growing for the prime minister and President to resign. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother President Gotabaya hail from the Rajapakse family, which is the oldest and the most powerful political family in the South Asian country. However, the protests have dented the PM and President’s standing. Both of them however, defied the protesters and refused to resign despite the public pressure.

But, Yesterday, the Prime Minister Finally gave in to the demands of Protesters and announced his resignation. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post. This came after violent clashes erupted between pro- and anti-government protesters outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s office in Colombo.

After his resignation, violence erupted across the nation. As per the police, five people died in the violence in the nation on Monday. The Rajapaksa family’s ancestral home in Hambantota was also set on fire by protesters.
