“women in Mahadarwaja hamlet of Metghar village in Trimbakeshwar taluka have to walk every day for three hours to reach a well which is the only source of water available around. But there too, they have to risk their lives and climb down the steep walls of the well and scrape a potful of water from the bottom.
The well is the only source of water for the 300-odd residents of the hamlet.
In the visuals you can see how one of the women is climbing down the steep well. holding the rocks erected and hopping onto the next. The risk is such that if they lose the grip they may fall in the well, and face either severe injuries or death. All this for a bucketful of water. The Water in the well is at the very bottom. and this water the women use for non drinking and also for drinking purpose. The women help each other to climb down the wall daily. This takes three hours of their lives.
The rising temperature has already triggered water scarcity in at least one village in Trimbakeshwar taluka in Nashik district and two villages in Nandurbar district. While no tankers are being used to supply drinking water to villagers in any part of the five districts of Maharashtra so far, the requests for the same have started pouring in Nashik and Nandurbar districts. The situation in Ahmednagar, Dhule and Jalgaon districts is relatively better as of now.
Incidentally, the district which is now thirsty for water last year experience major flooding as the water levels soared in Godavari. Nashik district, which has received five floods from Godavari, is experiencing dire water shortage this year.
