CPI(M) write to EC over PM Modi’s address to the nation on ‘Mission Shakti’

Sitaram Yechury

New Delhi | CPI(M) Chief Sitaram Yechury has written a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, demanding why did they allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the nation today on the launch of the A-SAT missile under ‘Mission Shakti’.

The letter starts with congratulating the scientists and the organizations involved in the achievement.

“We are sure that in the coming days, Indian scientists will reach at greater heights of targetting hostile satellites in the regular space orbits as well”, adding, “The achievements fill the country with pride. Congratulations to the scientists”.

The letter points out that rather than Prime Minister addressing the nation, these kinds of announcements should be done by the relevant organizations and scientists like the DRDO.

They accused PM Modi of violating the Model Code of Conduct as the announcement comes in the midst of the ongoing election campaign.

“I would like to know if the EC was informed of such an address and did the Election Commission consider and permit it?”, it read.

They accused whether “the achievements of the scientists were politically coloured during the course of elections”, and wondered what were the special reasons of the Commission to allow this to happen.

This letter comes amid a huge backlash across many political leaders who have accused PM Modi of violating the Model Code of Conduct and making it a political gimmick.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that India had demonstrated anti-satellite missile capability by shooting down a live satellite, describing it as a rare achievement that puts the country in an exclusive club of space superpowers.
