“Cut Off My Head”: Mamata Banerjee After Protest For Restoration of Electricity

Many areas are still flooded and electricity is still cut due to the super cyclone Amphan that ravaged coastal and other regions of Bengal and Odisha.

Kolkata: After Cyclone Amphan ravaged through the state on Wednesday that caused damage widespread damage to the crops and houses and other essential services, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Saturday asked for more time to repair electricity and other services.

“It’s just been two days since the catastrophe. We are all working day and night. Please be patient,” CM said at a conference.

“The only thing I can say then is cut off my head,” Ms Banerjee said when asked about growing public discontent. The government announced it had called on the army to help.

On Saturday, hundreds took to the streets at different places in Kolkata and around to protest against what they said was the slow state response to power cuts and flooding after the disastrous cyclone.

There was trouble on the Barrackpore-Sodepur bypass with police and the public coming to blows after people put up a roadblock. In south Kolkata, there were roadblocks at Kasba and Garia. In Howrah, not from the CM’s office at Nabanna, people blocked Kona Expressway asking electricity.

At least 86 people were killed in the state as a result of Cyclone Amphan’s ferment along the Bay of Bengal coast, as officials grappled to deal with the aftermath of the storm while also trying to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

On Wednesday, Odisha and West Bengal experienced one of the worst storms over the Bay of Bengal in decades.

Advance interim assistance of Rs 1,000 crore was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for West Bengal after he conducted an aerial survey of the areas in damaged by Cyclone Amphan.
