Justice BR Gavai Takes Oath

He said that his focus will be on cutting down the number of cases which are pending in the Supreme Court

Justice BR Gavai took oath as the Chief Justice of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday. He has become the 52nd Chief Justice of India and the first ever Buddhist CJI.

He succeeded Justice Sanjiv Khanna who served as the 51st CJI of India. Justice Khanna retired just the previous day after serving for six months after Justice DY Chandrachud’s term ended.

The oath taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu and other leaders and attendees.

Other attendees included Former President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Health Minister JP Nadda along with many others.

After having taken the oath, the new CJI greeted many with folded hands and shook hands with a few people. This included PM Modi, Vice President Dhankar, former President Ram Nath Kovind and others. But, he touched his mother’s feet after greeting her.

He was born into humble beginnings and became a part of the Supreme Court on 24 May, 2019. In his tenure as a Supreme Court Judge, he has been part of about 700 benches. In these, he dealt with a very wide range of judicial matters.

Justice Gavai was also part of a constitution bench, which consisted of five judges in December 2023. They unexpectedly upheld the decision of the Centre to abrogate provisions of Article 370. This bestowed special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Justice Gavai was part of a five-judge constitution bench, which annulled the electoral bonds scheme for political funding.

And he was also a part of a five-judge constitution bench. The bench gave the stamp of approval to the Centre’s decision in 2016 after a 4:1 majority verdict. The decision was to demonetise the denomination currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000.
