SC to hear Chidambaram bail plea in money laundering case on Wednesday

Kapil Sibal said the 74-year-old former finance minister has been in jail for the past 90 days. The case is likely to be heard on Wednesday

New Delhi: On Monday the Supreme Court agreed to hear the bail petition of Congress leader P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate. Former Finance minister had challenged the Delhi high court’s Friday order denying him bail in the case.

Congress leader and senior advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the bail plea before a three-judge SC bench headed by newly sworn Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde, Justices B.R. Gavai, and Surya Kant. Kapil Sibal said the 74-year-old former finance minister has been in jail for the past 90 days. The case is likely to be heard on Wednesday.

On November 15 the Delhi high court dismissed Chidambaram’s bail plea in the case filed by the ED, saying prima facie allegations against him were serious in nature and he played an “active and key role” in the offense.

Chidambaram was first arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 21 in the INX Media corruption case and was granted bail by the top Court on October 22.

Chidambaram was arrested by the ED in the money laundering case on October 16, is presently in judicial custody till November 27 under the order of a trial court.

On May 15, 2017, the CBI had registered the case alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram’s tenure as the finance minister.

Hence, the ED had lodged a money laundering case regarding this in the same year.
