On the other hand, Abhijeet Banerjee too seemed to have softened his stand on criticism of Modi govt’s economic policy. After the meeting, Banerjee said that it was a “privilege” meeting PM Modi. He said PM Modi spent quite a lot of time with him and explained to him “his way of thinking about India”. “It was very unique,” Banerjee said.
“One hears about policies but one really hears about thinking behind it. He talked about the way he sees governance in particular and why the mistrust of the people on the ground colours our governance and therefore, how it creates the structure of elite control over the governance, not a responsive government, ” Banerjee said. He also added that PM Modi told him how he is trying to reform the bureaucracy in that process to make it more responsive.
He said it is important for India to have or create a bureaucracy that actually lives on the ground and gets its stimulus from how life is on the ground.
