“Statue of Unity” For Sale For Rs 30,000 Crore On OLX To Collect Money For COVID 19, FIR lodged

“Emergency! Selling Statue of Unity because of urgent money required for the hospitals and healthcare equipment,” the advertisement on OLX read.

 

Surat| The country is currently fighting the Novel Coronavirus. A 21-day lockdown is in place to prevent this dangerous epidemic. Meanwhile, the big news has emerged from Gujarat. Apparently, Statue of Unity, World’s Tallest Statue in Kevadiya, Gujarat was put up for sale on OLX. The statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was listed for sale for Rs 30000 Crores. As soon as the matter came to light, the police came into action and the advertisement was taken down from the website.

The description below the advertisement read that the money received from selling the statue will be used for medical and healthcare equipment to fight COVID 19. “Emergency! Selling Statue of Unity because of urgent money required for the hospitals and healthcare equipment.” After the report appeared in a local newspaper regarding the same, the Statue of Unity authorities approached the police to file a complaint.

Nilesh Dubey, Assistant Commissioner at Statue of Unity said that an FIR has been filed against an unidentified person with “malafide intention to defame the government”. He further said that OLX should have verified the advertisement before it went public on the site.

The sections under which the FIR has been filed include:

  • IPC Section 505 (publishes, circulates any rumours)
  • IPC Section 417 (Punishment for cheating)
  • IPC Section 469 (forgery) and relevant sections of the Information and Technology Act.
