Wardha| Writing a letter to Prime Minister on Mob Lynching and disapproval of the FIR against 49 celebrities has cost the students of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University their studies. As many as six students were expelled by the University in Maharashtra’s Wardha for organizing an event to write dissent letters to PM Modi. Reportedly, the administration of the college had not given permission to hold the event. However, the students protested against the decision and thus six of them were expelled.
What is the matter?
According to reports, the students had organized a mass event to write letters to PM modi highlighting several issues in the country. As per the copies of letters accessed by HW News, the students had written to PM Modi asking questions on increasing mob lynching in the country, lockdown in Kashmir, NRC, Intolerance, Privatization of Govt owned companies, Women’s security and shielding criminals etc. One of the letters read, “If the situations are not taken seriously, the youth of the country may turn to violence.” It also added that rampant privatization of govt-owned companies is a murder of constitution by the govt.
The administration, however, did not give permission for the event. When the students went ahead and held the event, the administration issued an order and expelled six of them. The six students named in the circular are Neeraj Kumar, Rajesh Sarthi, Rajnish Ambedkar, Pankaj Vela and Vaibhav Pimpalkar.
Expelled students for Violating Model Code of Conduct
However, the ground on which they have been expelled have raised eyebrows. The circular mentions that they have been expelled for violating the model code of conduct implemented in the state ahead of the assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the expelled students have said that their voices are being suppressed. All India Student’s Association too has raised its voice against it. The AISA press release stated that the “alleged crime” of the students was “was to write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the present situation in the country.”
The expelled students have also written a letter to the University administration. In the letter, they have argued that they haven’t done any unconstitutional, undemocratic or criminal act.
OBC, Dalits singled out
But the issue does not stop here. The expelled students allege that there were hundreds of students who attended the event, however, the administration specifically targetted the “backward” students. They also said that Three OBCs and Three Dalits were singled out and expelled.
Meanwhile, Congress has condemned the issue. The state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant submitted a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer asking them to take suo-moto action against the University for curbing freedom of expression.
