PM Modi in Chennai today, says “Tamil” a talking point in the US after his UNGA speech

“During my USA trip when I said something in Tamil when I told the world that Tamil is the world’s ancient language, it has become a talking point in America,” said Modi.

 

Chennai| Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Chennai on Monday to attend the IIT Madras convocation. Earlier, Modi sought suggestions from alumni and faculty of the institute for a topic of speech at the event. Along with taking part in the convocation here, he will also honour the winners of the Singapore-India Hackathon 2019 at the IIT Campus itself. This hackathon was a competition between tech experts between India and Singapore.

Many people on the Narendra Modi app gave suggestions to the Prime Minister for his speech. These included talking about the development of the country with Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the use of students for pursuing higher education in India. A former student wrote that the Prime Minister should also tell about how IITians can help in making the country’s economy a $ 5 trillion economy.

After landing in Chennai, PM Modi said that it is his first visit after his victory in the Lok Sabha elections 2019. He also drew the attention of the crowd towards his UNGA speech where he mentioned famous Tamil Philosopher Kaniyan Pungundranar. He said, after his speech, Tamil has become a talking point in the US. “During my USA trip when I said something in Tamil when I told the world that Tamil is the world’s ancient language, the language became a talking point in America,” said Modi.

Modi’s statement at UNGA mentioning the Tamil philosopher is also considered to be a strategic move to quell the language stir back home. Several protests had erupted especially in Tamil Nadu after Home Minister Amit Shah had suggested that Hindi should be given the status of National Language.
