‘Delhi Riots A Matter Of National Shame’: Former PM Manmohan Singh Slams Govt

Northeast Delhi Riots, which started on Sunday eve, has devastated the country leaving at least 35 people dead and many injured.

New Delhi| The situation remained tense in the riot-hit areas in NE Delhi even as the death toll crossed 30. The dead include two policemen.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had called for Army intervention on Wednesday saying the situation was ‘alarming’ and the police were ‘unable to control it’.

There was also a fresh controversy over Wednesday’s late-night notification that moved Justice Muralidhar, the judge hearing Delhi violence case, to Punjab and Haryana High Court. Slamming the Centre, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said the move was ‘not shocking’, while former Congress president Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to ‘remind’ people about Justice Loya.

Sonia Gandhi slammed Centre and Kejriwal government for being ‘mute spectators’ of violence. Senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh termed riots as ‘total failure of Centre.’

“We called upon the president to suggest to him that what has happened in last four days in Delhi is a matter of great concern and a matter of national shame in which at least 34 people have died and 200 people are injured, it is a reflection on total failure of central government,” Singh said.

Congress delegation demanded the immediate resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah. Singh urged President Kovind to ‘use his power to protect ‘raj dharma.’ Congress questioned why the Centre didn’t deploy additional security forces after riots escalated.
