“I am sorry. Didn’t take the broad view of the responsibilities”: Mark Zuckerberg in Congressional testimony

Mark Zuckerberg said that the company will do everything to protect the integrity of upcoming elections in India as well as other countries.

 

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday appeared before the US congressional Committee for testimony in the Facebook data breach case. The social media giant has come under fire after Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie had revealed that the company obtained the private data of millions of Facebook users in an unauthorised manner. The company was involved in the Presidential campaign of Donald Trump, which raised more questions on company’s operations.

Facebook, on the other hand, drew a backlash for not deploying enough security measures to protect the user’s data. Answering the congressional committee, Zuckerberg said that the company will do everything to protect the integrity of upcoming elections in India as well as other countries across the world.

“2018 is an essential year for elections. Not only the US midterms but, there are important elections — in India, in Brazil, in Mexico, in Pakistan and in Hungary,” said Mark Zuckerberg.” We are trying to make sure that we do everything we can to protect the integrity of those elections,” he added.

Mark Zuckerberg also took the responsibility of the data breach and admitted it was a mistake that company didn’t take the broad view of the responsibility that comes with it. it was my mistake. “And I’m sorry. I started Facebook, I run it, and I’m responsible for what happens here, ” Zuckerberg testified in front of 44 senators.

He further revealed that data privacy issues and outside interference in elections has always been a matter of concern for Facebook. Zuckerberg told the committee that the company is coming up with a new measures to check the fake accounts. He said Artificial Intelligence tools have been deployed to remove the proliferating fake accounts that can be used for spreading misinformation to meddle in the elections.
