New Delhi| Recalling the era of emergency, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit out at PM Modi calling his first term in the office as “Super Emergency”. In a tweet, Banerjee said that India went through “Super Emergency” in the last five years. She also added that a lesson must be learnt from history. She also appealed that democratic institutions must be protected.
She tweeted, “Today is the anniversary of the #Emergency declared in 1975. For the last five years, the country went through a ‘Super Emergency’. We must learn our lessons from history and fight to safeguard the democratic institutions in the country.”

On June 25, 1975, the first-ever emergency was imposed in the country by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. During the emergency, the government clamped down on the dissent voices, opposition and freedom of the press. PM Modi has been targetting Congress on Emergency since long. Today, he released a video on Emergency on his Twitter. “India salutes all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted the Emergency. India’s democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset,” he tweeted.
