Home Ministry asks states to collect biometric data of Rohingya migrants in India

New Delhi | The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday has issued an advisory to all the state government to observe and collect biometric data of Rohingya migrants living in India.

Speaking in Lok Sabha Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh during the question of Rohingya Migrants said the government had received reports of their involvement in illegal activities. Singh further made it clear that Rohingyas were ā€œillegal migrantsā€ and not ā€œrefugees.ā€

Rajnath Singh also mentioned that the government has already ordered the Border Security forces and Assam Rifles to stop the migrants from entering India.”The Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam Rifles have also been sensitised over not allowing in more illegal immigrants,” said Rajnath.

The Union Minister further clarified the governments stand on the deportation of the illegal migrants. While answering a question related to the deportation of the Rohingyas, Singh said that the Home Ministry was waiting for the enumeration process to be complete, after which it would be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) who will in turn take it up with the government of Myanmar.

Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijuju informed the Lok Sabha that around 40,000 Rohingya living in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad (Telangana), Mewat in Haryana and Tripura.
