New Delhi: Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said he has come up with a new working definition of ‘swadeshi economics’ and has appealed to the Swadeshi Jagran Manch to consider this new interpretation.
Kumar asked the Manch to look at the definition of ‘swadeshi economics’ in the light of two critical objectives — generating more jobs and high growth. “I have always wanted to define swadeshi ‘economics’, To me it means, above all, generating enough good quality jobs for our young people.
“In my mind, national interest is served if our economic policies cater to these two objectives. Everything else to me, therefore, is secondary — whether these jobs come through foreign direct investment, public investment or Indian corporate investment. Hence, I would appeal to the Swadeshi Jagran Manch to adopt the same definition for a nationalist or a swadeshi economic policy.”
Kumar backed the Flipkart- Walmart deal and admitted that they differ in this case. He said there was hardly any scope for government intervention as it was a “friendly merger” and not a “hostile takeover”, which may have warranted an intervention. Earlier the Swadeshi Jagran Manch had objectified the Flipkart- Walmart deal and stated that it will hurt small retailers and wanted the government to stall it.
