Maneka Gandhi said that the Ministry intends to bring an amendment under POCSO which will award death penalty for the rape of children below 12 years of age.
After the country-wide uproar over gruesome gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old child in Kathua, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has taken steps to introduce an amendment in the POCSO act. Maneka Gandhi talking about the Kathua case said that she is deeply disturbed by the Kathua rape case and all other recent rape cases involving children.
Maneka Gandhi said that the Ministry intends to bring an amendment under POCSO which will award death penalty for the rape of children below 12 years of age. Gandhi said, “I and the ministry intend to bring an amendment to the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act asking for the death penalty for rape on children below 12 years”.
The BJP and Central government drew widespread criticism from all the sections of society for the manner in which the Kathua case and Unnao rape case were handled, both involving minor girls. In Kathua, two BJP MLAs were found defending the accused while in Unnao the BJP MLA himself was accused of rape of a 17 years old girl and assaulting her father.
