Jammu: In wake of increased attacks on the security forces in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has floated tenders to buy 150 new bulletproof gypsies for the safety of cops and senior police officials in militancy-affected areas.
Keeping in view the deadly attacks on police officers in Kashmir including one on SHO Feroz Ahmed Dar in which he was killed along with five policemen and recently on the SSP of Shopian Sri Ram in which he had a narrow escape when his vehicle was fired upon heavily by militants, the police authorities have finally decided to buy these BP gypsies without any further delay.
In this regard, the police had floated a notice last week inviting tender for fabrication of the vehicles into bullet-resistant vehicles (BRVs) to arm officers, cops and moving patrol teams against the militant attacks.
The Centre has already announced Rs 500 crores for the modernization of J&K Police under Prime Minister Development Programme.
DGP J&K, S.P Vaid said that apart from buying 150 BP gypsies, many more things will also be purchased for the safety of cops and the process for the same has already been initiated. He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs was kind enough to take a swift action and sanction the bulletproof vehicles for almost all police stations and senior officersâ.
The underbelly of BP vehicles shall be protected against the blasts of two hand grenades of HE-36 intensity and it will be made up with bullet resistant material and bullet resistant glasses for the total safety of the cops.
