A Delhi PMLA court granted a ten day custody of Gautam Thapar, the deposed promoter of the Avantha Group, to the Enforcement Directorate yesterday. The ED has filed charges of money laundering against him and has sought his prolonged custody for custodial interrogation, for massive money laundering transactions. The grant of a ten day custody means that the charges against Gautam Thapar are grave and need a deep investigation and the gathering of evidence against him. He will now be produced before the court on 16.8.2021. Thapar’s alarmed counsel pleaded to the court that the ED must disclose all its pending cases against him, that it must furnish a copy of the ECIR (FIR equivalent) and that his fundamental right of silence during interrogation must be protected. Let us have a look at the cases against Gautam Thapar and why does the ED need his custody for so long, particularly when extensive investigation of the same matter, has been already conducted by the CBI, which too has filed a FIR in the case.
