Maharashtra Unlock U-Turn: After Minister’s Announcement, Govt Clarifies No Final Decision Yet

“State restrictions have not been lifted,” said the Maharashtra government, according to NDTV

Hours after Maharashtra cabinet minister Vijay Wadettiwar in a press conference announced an elaborate five-level unlock plan, the state government clarified that new rules to phase out COVID-19 restrictions in place since mid-April are “still under consideration”. This time, no timeline has been specified for the new plan.

“We have not completely stopped the corona infection. Infection is still on the rise in some places in rural areas. Considering the deadly and changing form of the coronavirus, it is important to decide whether or not to relax the restrictions. State restrictions have not been lifted,” said the Maharashtra government, according to NDTV

“Break the chain has begun to relax some of the restrictions, with the Disaster Management Department deciding on five stages, the weekly positivity rate and the availability of oxygen beds. Detailed guidelines for tightening or relaxing the restrictions in the state on the basis of these criteria will be notified by the government,” the statement said.

Relief & Rehabilitation Minister Wadettiwar announced that Maharashtra has prepared a five-level to unlock plan for the state on the basis of positivity rate and status of occupancy of oxygen beds in the districts, based on which unlocking will start in 18 districts from Friday.

Later, the minister, said that only “in principle” approval had been given to phasing out of restrictions and said no decision had been taken, reported PTI.

No ‘unlock’ is happening in the state. Even though in-principle approval has been given, the final decision will be taken by the Chief Minister,” the Congress leader stated.

Leader of Opposition and Former BJP Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis soon criticized the government on its flip-flops.

“What’s open and what’s closed? Lock or unlock? Immaturity or Credit seeking?” Fadnavis tweeted.

Maharashtra reported 15,229 and 643 deaths in the last 24 hours.
