3.33 Lakh Fresh Covid Cases In India, Marginally Lower Than Yesterday

New Delhi: India’s daily Covid curve showed marginal improvement today as the country reported 3.33 lakh cases, which is marginally lower than yesterday. With a tally of 3.92 crore cases, India is the second worst-hit country after the US.

The active cases now comprise 5.57 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.18 per cent. The daily positivity rate – the share of coronavirus tests that return positive and considered a key marker of the pandemic’s status – is slightly up from 17.22% to 17.78% while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 16.65 per cent.

India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 161.81 crore doses with more than 61 lakh doses being administered on Saturday, the Health Ministry said. More than 79 lakh (79,78,438) booster doses for the identified categories of beneficiaries have been administered so far.

As many as 525 people have died of Covid during the past 24-hour period, according to the Health Ministry. Fourteen states have reported more than 10 deaths. 60 per cent of the patients who died during the current wave of COVID-19 pandemic were either partially or fully unvaccinated.

Daily Covid infections in Maharashtra, one of the worst-hit states by the Covid pandemic, rose by 46,393 on Saturday, taking the state’s tally to 74.66 lakh. 416 Omicron infections and 48 pandemic-related deaths were also reported in the state, as per the health department.

Mumbai reported 3,568 new coronavirus cases on Saturday – a 28 per cent drop from a day before and 83 per cent over the all-time high two weeks ago. This was the fourth day in a row that daily COVID-19 cases dropped in the country’s financial capital.

Delhi added 45 deaths in the last 24 hours – highest number of deaths in a single day after June 5 which saw 68 fatalities – due to COVID-19.

With 16 fresh coronavirus-linked deaths, the number of deaths rose to 23,038 in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, while 16,740 new cases took the infection tally to 19,33,165 on Saturday, according to an official statement. The state has extended the closure of schools in the state till January 30 in view of rising coronavirus cases in the state.

In the south, Kerala continued to record steep rise in COVID-19 cases with 45,136 new positive cases being reported on Saturday, taking the tally to 55,74,702. Neibhouring Tamil Nadu on Saturday breached the grim 30,000-mark by adding 30,744 infections to 31,03,410 till date, according to the Health Department.

The positivity rate in Manipur has reached 20 per cent. Over 2,000 people have died due to the virus so far.

The coronavirus has killed at least 5,572,224 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to AFP. The United States has recorded the most Covid deaths with 860,248, followed by Brazil with 622,205, India on 488,884 and Russia 324,752.
