The News Minute co-founder and editor-in-chief Dhanya Rajendran has been named the 2022 recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women mediapersons, The Wire reported.
The award, named after freedom fighter Chameli Devi Jain was instituted in 1982 by The Media Foundation and seeks to honor extraordinary Indian women journalists.
Chameli Devi Jain awardees include some of the best-known and respected names in Indian journalism. They have pioneered and popularised new journalism in terms of themes and values – such as social development, politics, equity, gender justice, health, war and conflict, and consumer values,” the Media Foundation noted in an earlier statement.
Among previous recipients are Barkha Dutt, Pamela Philipose (now The Wire‘s ombudsperson), Neha Dixit, Sucheta Dalal, Supriya Sharma, Teesta Setalvad, and The Wire‘s senior editor Arfa Khanum Sherwani.
This year’s award jury comprised former NDTV journalist Nidhi Razdan, Indian Express‘s rural affairs and agriculture editor Harish Damodaran, and the Press Trust of India’s Bhasha editor Nirmal Pathak.
The News Minute, the website Rajendran co-founded and runs, has reported that she has worked as a journalist for over 20 years, “in print, television and digital news organizations, covering important and ignored news from south India throughout her career.”
Among the most recent news updates brought to light by News Minute under Rajendran’s leadership is electoral data fraud in Karnataka, which threatens to impinge upon thousands’ right to vote in the upcoming assembly election.
