BJP, which has been in exile in Delhi for 27 years, now wants to capture the CMโ€™s residence,โ€œ The CMO alleged.

Key Takeaways From Delhi Election Results

Shashank
Delhi

After 27 years of exile, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured victory in the Delhi assembly polls. The BJP is currently leading on 48 seats and the AAP on 22 out of the 70 seats, and just like in 2015 and 2020, the Congress could not even open its account.

The Rise Of AAP

Rising from the India Against Corruption movement, Arvind Kejriwal formed the AAP on 2nd October 2012, branding itself as the party with a change fighting corruption. Kejriwal defeated three-time chief minister Sheila Dikshit in her constituency of New Delhi by 22,000 votes.

The AAP formed a minority government after Congress offered unconditional support to the AAP, and Kejriwal was sworn in as CM. Unable to gain consensus on passing the Jan Lokpal bill in the Delhi assembly, Kejriwal resigned as CM in 49 days.

In 2014, Kejriwal contested against BJPโ€™s PM candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi. He polled more than 2 Lakh votes. In the 2015 assembly elections, the AAP swept the Elections by winning 67 seats at a time when the Modi wave was still in place. In 5 years, Kejriwal branded his governance as the Delhi Model with claims of free electricity, free water, quality education and healthcare. In 2020, AAP retained power and won almost the same number of seats, 62 out of the 70. However, 2025 saw a major debacle for not just the AAP but for its top leadership as well.

No Sympathy Factor

The AAP, which was banking too much on sympathy votes, was stunned after Satyendar Jain, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodiya, all those who were arrested by central agencies, lost their seat.

A lesson that the AAP did not learn after the Lok Sabha elections. Despite their jail ka jawab vote se campaign, the AAP could not win a single seat in Delhi.

Congress Plays Spoilsport

Another takeaway is that the cracks within the INDIA alliance have further widened.
Although, the Congress could not win a single seat despite AAPโ€™s anti-incumbency, However, the Congress played spoilsport for the AAP.

Take the Eg of New Delhi seat where Parvesh Verma won against Arvind Kejriwal by a margin of 4,013 votes and Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit polled 4,531 votes. Even in the Jangpura seat , former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia lost by a narrow margin of just 600 votes. Where Congress candidate polled 7,324 votes. Similarly, in Greater Kailash, Saurabh Bharadwaj lost by  3,188 votes, and the congress candidate Garvit Singhvi  polled 6,711.

Delhi Gets Strong Opposition

Another takeaway from the results has to be that the Delhi assembly will now get a brute opposition after ages, who would raise the issues faced by the people of the national capital.
With 22 AAP MLAs, the BJP, which questioned the AAP on Yamauna cleaning and pollution, will have a lot of expectations to live up to.

Modi Factor Reinstated

After the Lok Sabha polls, many political pundits questioned the Modi factor or the popularity of PM Modi.  With the saffron party scripting history in Haryana and Maharashtra and, coming back to power after 27 years in Delhi without a CM face, and fighting under the leadership of PM Modi. The Modi factor has been reinstated.
