In 2022, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh collectively accounted for more than three-quarters of all UAPA cases in India. West Bengal alone contributed to a quarter of all sedition cases. According to the National Crime Records Bureau data on ‘offences against the state,’ there were 20 sedition cases under IPC Section 124A nationwide, while 1,005 cases were registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The NCRB, under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, presented this information in its annual crime report.
