PM Modi Visits Varanasi

On September 23rd, 2023, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Varanasi for a series of significant events.

News coming from the official website of the PM of India portrays PM Modi’s upcoming plans. On September 23rd, 2023, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Varanasi for a series of significant events. At approximately 1:30 PM, the Prime Minister will preside over the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the International Cricket Stadium in Varanasi. Later, around 3:15 PM, he will arrive at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre to partake in the closing ceremony of the Kashi Sansad Sanskritik Mahotsav 2023. During this occasion, he will also dedicate 16 Atal Awasiya Vidyalaya institutions constructed across Uttar Pradesh to the nation.

The establishment of the International Cricket Stadium in Varanasi represents a crucial step towards realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of developing modern, world-class sports infrastructure. Situated in Ganjari, Rajatalab, Varanasi, this state-of-the-art stadium will span over 30 acres and involve an estimated expenditure of approximately Rs 450 crores. The stadium’s design is inspired by Lord Shiva, featuring crescent-shaped roof covers, floodlights in the shape of tridents, seating resembling ghat steps, and metallic sheets on the facade designed in the shape of Bilvipatra. It is designed to accommodate up to 30,000 spectators.

In pursuit of enhancing access to quality education, the construction of 16 Atal Awasiya Vidyalaya institutions across Uttar Pradesh, with an investment of roughly Rs 1115 crores, has been initiated. These schools are exclusively intended for the education of children of laborers, construction workers, and orphans affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim is to provide high-quality education and support the holistic development of these children. Each school is situated on 10-15 acres of land and includes classrooms, a sports ground, recreational areas, a mini auditorium, a hostel complex, mess facilities, and residential flats for staff. These residential schools are expected to ultimately accommodate up to 1,000 students each.

Prime Minister Modi’s vision to bolster the cultural vibrancy of Kashi has led to the inception of the Kashi Sansad Sanskritik Mahotsav. This grand event witnessed the participation of over 37,000 individuals across 17 different disciplines, showcasing their talents in singing, instrumental performances, street theater (nukkad natak), dancing, and more. Outstanding participants will have the opportunity to showcase their cultural talents during the program at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre.

India Halts Canadian Visas Amid Tensions

Zaina Afzal Kutty
India has taken the step of temporarily suspending the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens due to what it cites as "security threats" that have disrupted the normal operations of its missions in Canada.

In a recent development, India has taken the step of temporarily suspending the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens due to what it cites as “security threats” that have disrupted the normal operations of its missions in Canada. This move comes amidst a rising dispute surrounding the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil.

Tensions between the two nations escalated this week when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested that India may have played a role in the assassination that occurred on June 18. However, Mr. Trudeau clarified that his intent was not to provoke India with these allegations.

India has strongly rejected these allegations, labeling them as “absurd.” During his remarks at the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr. Trudeau emphasized the growing importance of India as a nation and the need to maintain a working relationship. He stressed that Canada’s focus is on upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of its citizens, rather than creating further issues with India.

The bilateral relationship between India and Canada, both of which are key trade and security partners and allies of the United States, has been strained for several months and is currently at an all-time low, as per analysts’ assessments.

India’s government has made it clear that the suspension of visa services also applies to Canadians situated in third countries. This decision stems from security threats directed at Indian diplomatic missions in Canada, leading to disruptions in their normal functioning. India is seeking diplomatic parity with Canada, citing interference in its internal affairs as a reason for this demand.

In response, Canada has announced a reduction in its diplomatic personnel in India, citing threats received by some of its diplomats on social media. This move is aimed at ensuring the safety of their diplomatic staff while continuing to offer visa services within India.

The relationship between these two nations is historically close, with significant interests at stake. Canada boasts a sizable population of Indian origin, particularly among the Sikh community. India, on the other hand, is a major source of international students for Canadian institutions. Additionally, a substantial number of Canadian tourists visit India annually. Hence, resolving these tensions is crucial for the benefit of both countries.
