“Difficult Night”: Australian PM Scott Morrison Concedes Defeat After Being Ousted In Polls

After a “difficult night” for his conservative government, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison admitted defeat in national elections Saturday.

“Tonight I have spoken to the leader of the opposition and the incoming prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and I have congratulated him on his election victory,” Morrison said.

According to media projections, Australians have voted to remove Scott Morrison-led government, ending a decade of conservative rule. 

With half of the ballots counted, Anthony Albanese, the Labor leader, is likely to win more seats than the ruling coalition, national broadcaster ABC and other media said.

At the time of this report being prepared, it was not clear whether Labor would need allies to secure a majority.

According to ABC’s projections, Labor had so far secured 72 seats against the 51 seats secured by conservatives. 

The majority mark to form a government is 76 seats. 

Australians, after a flurry of climate-induced crises and the Covid pandemic, a string of climate-focused candidates who could yet hold the balance of power.
