Greta Thunberg was amongst several other international celebrities who had tweeted in support of the protests near Delhi against farm laws.
Accusing her of “criminal conspiracy and promoting enmity on grounds of religion”, the Delhi Police have filed a case against teen climate activist Greta Thunberg over her tweets on the farmers’ protests, NDTV reported.
Greta Thunberg was amongst several other international celebrities who had tweeted in support of the protests near Delhi against farm laws, drawing international attention to the farmers’ agitation that began late-November.
On Tuesday, Ms Thunberg had tweeted in support of agitating farmers, shortly after pop-star Rihanna shared similar views.
Sharing a CNN story about the protests and the government restricting Internet near protest sites, Ms Thunberg had written: “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India.”
The Swedish climate activist had today shared a “toolkit” advising people on how to show support for the protests.
A similar “toolkit” was posted by her yesterday with information on support to farmers on Republic Day last week, but was taken down later. This morning, she said she was sharing an updated list.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), after the international attention drawn to the protests owing to the tweets by celebrities, issued a statement calling out “vested interest groups”.
In an unprecedented and sharp response, the Indian government warned against the “temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments” and said the protests were by “a very small section of farmers” in parts of India.
“Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken. The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,” the MEA had said in its statement.
