Gitanjali Rao was interviewed by actor and activist Angelina Jolie who is a contributing editor at the Time Magazine.

Indian-American Gitanjali Rao has been named Kid of the Year by Time magazine. Gitanjali is just 15 years old but has achieved successes in the fields of innovation. Time magazine has called Gitanjali a scientist and inventor. The magazine has chosen someone in this category for the first time.

The Time Magazine selected her from among 5000 nominees for her “astonishing work using technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying”. Rao’s latest innovation is Kindly, an app and a Chrome extension, which uses machine learning technology to detect early traces of cyberbullying.

The magazine received more than 5,000 nominations for the first-ever “Kid of the Year” issue. Of these, only Gitanjali was chosen. She was interviewed by actor and activist Angelina Jolie who is a contributing editor at the Time Magazine.

Gitanjali in the interview said, “Our generation is facing many such problems which have never been seen before. Old problems also persist. On the one hand, we are facing an epidemic, on the other hand, there are problems related to human rights. We did not create problems like climate change and cyberbullying. However, we have to solve these with the help of technology.”

The youngest girl to get a spot on Time’s cover

Gitanjali is the youngest girl to get a spot on the cover of Time magazine. Last year, climate activist Greta Thunberg was voted Person of the Year by the magazine at the age of 16. Every year since 1927, the magazine selects the person of the year for the special achievement. Every year it updates its category.
