Not Guilty: Donald Trump Acquitted By Senate Impeachment Trial

President Trump was acquitted by the US Senate of the two impeachment counts passed by the House: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Washington| The United States Senate cleared Donald Trump of both charges in its impeachment trial of the president, bringing to an end the impeachment saga that has consumed Washington since the House of Representatives launched its inquiry into the Trump’s actions last September.

The Senate, run by the president’s fellow Republicans, voted to acquit him 52-48 on charges of abuse of power and 53-47 on obstruction of Congress.

In a 52-48 vote, the Senate found Trump not guilty of abusing his power of office. The Senate voted 53-47 to acquit the president on the charge of obstruction of Congress.

Mr Trump is the third US president to have been impeached.

The two others, Bill Clinton in 1999 and Andrew Johnson in 1868, were left in power by the Senate and did not seek re-election. President Richard Nixon resigned before he could be impeached.

Mitt Romney, the former Republican presidential nominee, who sided with every Democrat and agreed that Trump abused his power and was guilty of “an appalling abuse of public trust.”

52-48 vote on abuse of power that the President would survive the impeachment was never really in question since Republicans hold a majority in the Senate and it would have taken a supermajority of two-thirds to convict him (that’s 67 senators).
53-47 on obstruction of Congress The vote on the second article of impeachment — obstruction of Congress — followed party lines after Romney sided with Republicans on that question.
“The sham impeachment attempt concocted by Democrats ended in the FULL vindication and exoneration of President @realDonaldTrump,” tweeted White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham.
